Sonki, the drug sector will show muted price action until the new drugs in the pipelines gain a higher profile and the market anticipates future revenues. I'd expect the drug sector to underperform while the market is churning but some drug stocks will lead based on what's in their pipelines when the market is ready to resume its upward course. While macroeconomic conditions remain benign or healthy, defensive stocks cannot outperform the market.

The news on MRK is company-specific, the analysts will factor out how future revenues will be impacted with the company not moving forward with the phase III trials and the selling mood of the market will take the price even lower.

Sonki,

I'm looking for some investment opps and the big pharmas are
the ones I'd like to put some money in and forget about it.
The technical picture is not pretty so no idea of how they
will perform this year. Long term I'm very bullish about
this sector because I witness exciting things are happening
in biomedical research. Big pharmas have the money to turn
the research into profit. Some selected biotech co's will
also do very well... For example, human genome project will
be done sooner than expected, maybe 2002-2003, this will
have a huge impact on health care... and you know the world
is aging too.

BTW, MRK dropped from 145 to 139 after NYSE was closed.
