Al, I've been quietly tracking MacMall's inventory for over a month now. Got a spreadsheet on it.

With regards to Rev B. iMac it's really bizarre. Back in December iMac inventory was around 4000-6000 range. Since the quarter ended the number has been climbing quite rapidly. It seems like MacMall would sell a few hundred of these iMacs and get a thousand more. It seems as if they are buying up the original iMacs from other vendors. Catalog resellers are known to do that with other models in the past. They are the first ones to get new machines and last ones to run out.

Many CompUSA have been out of the old iMacs for a while. The one in Culver City has been out for a couple weeks now. Most Best Buys have been out of iMacs since December. There has been a lot of talk in the media about high inventory of iMacs at Best Buy being the reason for their price drop.... that was not the case at all. There are only 289 Best Buys around the country. At most each store stocks about 45 iMacs at a time. By early December most of the stores have less than 20 iMacs on the shelf. When the unauthorized price drop took place in mid Dec most Best Buy stores had 15-25 iMacs which sold out within the week. I've always believed that one of the main reason that Best Buy lowered its price on iMacs in Dec was to hurt CompUSA which sells far more iMacs than Best Buy and has far higher inventory of iMacs at the time of the price cut.

Basically many superstores (Best Buy & CompUSA) locations have been out of the old iMacs for a while now. Small VARS seem to have a few iMacs around.. usually no more than 5. I haven't check Fry's or EDU channels. Catalog resellers seem to have the bulk of the original iMacs.
