I respect your opinion, but I do have a different point of view. No one has made an issue of any technology transfer to the Russians. The Chinese, yes. I think that the issue of a transfer to the Chinese is without foundation. Well, let me change that, I know it is. I wish to retain my anonymity, so I won't go into detail about "how" I know that.

But let's look at the facts. The fact is that both Loral and Hughes have been launching satellites on the Long March. What is alleged is that those two companies gave them information that helped them do this better, and that same information would improve the accuracy of the Chinese's weapon delivery systems. Both companies maintain that any information exchanged is readily available in standard texts that can be had on any well stocked library's shelves. I am aware that the latter is true.

But just the simple fact that the companies launched a satellite on a Long March gives the Chinese a wealth of experience that you could never get out of a text book. If there was any helping the Chinese, it is only, and I repeat only, because we bought a ride, and the sheer act of them delivering the goods gave them invaluable experience that they couldn't get by looking up answers in the back of a book.

If the US government wants to ban launches on a Long March because it gives the Chinese experience that they can't get elsewhere, well, that is their prerogative. I don't happen to agree with it, not even in the slightest.

The Russians are another matter. They have got more launch experience than we do, so buying a ride isn't going to make them any smarter. I do not advocate giving national secrets to the Russians. But, in my opinion, to hold up this launch because of national secrets "safety" is ludicrous. The satellites are made in Italy, they are already in Baikanor, and have been in Baikanor for a very long time. The very same type of satellite went through the integration for the Zenit launch using the same facilities and the same individuals turning the wrenches as would on the Soyuz. In fact, despite what Space News said this week, the G* satellites are well underway the integration process for the Soyuz - Aviation Week correctly stated so a few short weeks ago. (The State Department has given a OK to proceed up to a certain point, and then they can proceed no further.)

So what purpose is being served? I can see none.

As for limtex's statement that "it is my fault" I must be missing something. If the implication is that it is my fault that I am holding in the face of a potentially falling stock, well, yes I suppose that would be "my fault". But, I'm a grown-up, and am smart enough to buy puts when I feel the need arises.

I am also baffled as to why I seem to be getting rocks thrown at me for venting the same frustration that others have expressed. If you do not agree with my political spin, I apologize. But, hey, free speech and all. And I do quite emphatically disagree with how our government is handling this.

Regards

Mr. A

I am not happy with the whole launch dilema,
me either

however these are esential technologies.
pray tell?

I think it is more importent to protect these technologies then compromise them for profit.
spoken like a selfless patriot

As a shareholder I am unhappy,
me too

as an American I feel the technology that has been leaked to the Chinese and Russian's is unacceptable.
uh ..... I say if its unacceptable technology, leak it to those doggone Iraqis, as well

It is only a matter of time before China becomes are new nemisis
would you mind hosting the "yellow peril" revival thread here on SI

and Russia falls into a civil war.
I don't know which way to point my six shooter anymore

We must consider the security of the USA first.
God bless America

If GSTRF has to take another year to launch it's birds then so be it.
I say make 'em wait two years. Did you see where Bernie contracted to launch on a Froggie rocket as well?! Makes me hopping mad!!!

However allowing the Russian's to steal technology is not to be tollerated.
three years, by god make 'em wait three years

Ah well, there goes another Friday night. Mr. A, please keep on posting and vent whenever you feel compelled. This thread needs your reasoned analysis far more than it needs to read some jingoistic chest thumping ... or wine lubricated frivolous response thereto, for that matter. Well, back to the grape - French, I believe.

As it happens I wholeheartedly agree with you. The point is that that was a given before day 1 and G* should have known better than to put itself inot a position where its interests are in the hands of politicians and beaurocrats ' just waiting for this or that signiature or decsion'.

How many times are businessmen going to have to learn the lesson that as soon as they find themselves in a postition where beaurocrats can stop business, for the most noble of reasons, they will do so and the costs will be horrendous. Should be a giant warning to businessmen

"DANGER ---- BEAUROCRATS AND POLITICIANS -- KEEP AWAY"

OK its the Monday morning quarterback but lets just go for a launch that comes without all that stuff and lets do it soon and if that means more costs and mpore funding and a secondary well so be it.

Leave those guys to sort out the problem of Russian unemployment without the benefit of the commercial world. Its too difficult.

L
