That is not at all uncommon. I sold at the high of the day @ 3 5/8 and bought the next day at the low of the day (2 9/16 just a handful of weeks ago.)

When you work through a online broker you literally become a market maker. The shares you asked out there at 8 1/8 literally show up. If someone buys at the ask, and you are at the ask, you will sell your shares to the buyer. It is certainly not old school but a definite advantage over old school.

Best bid and best ask are just that, and you have the power to be either. The people are on fairly even footing these days.
