An interesting point. Much that is material is absolute and measureable to an epsilon - as in Newton's clockwork universe. On a large enough (intergalactic) or small enough (quantum foam) scale Newtonian space is not restrictive. The speeding baryon might divide into virtual particles and zoom off in opposite directions missing the from its own repulsion of itself (missing us entirely), or the speeding open cluster slip smoothly through another with no harm done to either (while we wouldn't notice). So used are we to living in the Newtonian local space-time that we don't notice that each particle of us is instantly dissolving and reconstituting itself, and our galaxy is collapsing into a point why fleeing every other into nothingness.
