Wendy, I have not followed Unitec at all. I understand they are a Canadian company involved with utilities (is the SCADA a type of process control and monitoring type of business?). As for the significance, I am not really sure, since almost anyone can join the Sun Developers Program. There might be a significance (and you'll have to check that) in the fact that Unitec is getting into the JENE system (is that what the jini environment refers to?), an application of JAVA to embedded system. If that was the case, supposedly, you can correct y2k type of problems in embedded software using Insignia' JENE (without having to replace all the chips where such embedded programs reside, in process control and monitoring systems this is an extremely vexing problems).

That might be completely wrong, however. Mind you if that was the case, the boost to Unitec would not last beyond the end of this year, if any, since by then all y2k work should be completed.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.
