Mr. A, I agree with your take and appreciate your posts. As to China becoming the next hegomonic power to contend with the US, then so be it. It is going to happen with or without our launching sats on their rockets. Their engineers and students can read text books, attend conferences, and learn things just like ours and they will if they want to. I don't believe the Chinese people, I am talking about the common folks, not the government beaurocrats, want to go to war with us, Russia, or anyone else. I believe they want toothbrushes, soap, tv's, an occasional Big Mac, free speech and an ever increasing std of living just like most folks around the world. That will come through global commerce, not nations isolating themselves from one another and building bigger missles to point at each other. I think those days are over. I think most Russians feel the same. The TSA is a joke, a worthless piece of paper. It will do nothing to help or hinder what its authors think it will do. Global commerce resulting in an improved standard of living for all will do more to assure world peace than any TSA, AST, or any other damn agreement. Launch the birds!

Mike, I detect some irrational patriotism*. Dangerous technology transfer to Russia or China? I am aware that some soldering technique was shown to the Chinese. Nothing to Russia. So, what was the technology transfer you are worried about? The government was able to put the details of the great threat to The Constitution and USA from Bill's cigar on the Web. Perhaps they could explain the technological great threat to national security on the Web too. Do you have a url?

If not, one could be forgiven for thinking that the greatest threat is to the security of the TSA Parchment Printers Guild, their salaries, lunches, first class trips, perks and maybe even bribes.

The geopolitical world has had a paradigm shift. Geopolitical power derives from economic might and will. In the archives of human history, that economic power derived from land and population which could be armed with spears and the biggest mob won [give or take a few technical details]. There was some mutual self-interest in Maoris with a particular Moko or other geographically and genetically matching gangs to hang pretty tough together. The Germans came up with an Aryan superiority theory on which to base their Mein Kampf fantasies and military actions. They got a lesson that there is something more to humans than genetic gangsterism and geopolitical power plays.

I asked you for a url on the threat. You see the geopolitical bomb loaded in that request? I have no boundaries, I move economic power from one place to another in the Web. The power of the Web is growing. The USA does not control it. Even without encryption, the power is wielded. When NSA immune encryption is used, and they can't stop it, they lose all control. They won't even be able to attack individuals - not that that is practical now.

By launching Globalstar, this huge threat to USA power is enhanced dramatically. But the USA cannot stop it. The USA cannot stop the Web. They are creating their own defeat.

The Web has mutual self-interest rising to rival the USA citizens mutual self-interest. What are you going to do about THAT? I believe all you and nationalist power trippers from Clinton to Saddam and Jeng Zemin and Jenny Shipley [you mustn't forget our little power trippers] can do is enjoy the last days of their statist, hierarchical power which has grown ever since the days of Pharoahs and before.

The transition is fun! The USA, French, Russians or Chinese can't nuke the Web! They can't even monitor it. Well, they can now. But it's just a zygote. Wait until it grows a bit more.

You want to worry about a threat to USA power? You better worry about THAT!

The other big threat to nationalistic USA power is a People's Power United Nations, reconstituted to derive from a democratic process instead of the Security Council big bosses club. One nation one vote is absurd. I want MY vote in the UN!

The USA Senate and TSA Parchment Guild are annoying me. I might have to move my money and Globalstar to somewhere more interested in helping build the Web. Perhaps China would be interested in handling my Globalstar and Web investments?

Maurice

* - irrational patriotism, like irrational market exuberance in Web stocks.

Unfortunately, the Web is a greater threat to individuals than to the USA! I haven't figured that one out yet. Imagine the power 'IT' will have over us. It'll make the old statist power look like a joke. Now THERE is something to worry about. You and Pierre will be agreeing on that one.
