Powering and power consumption are foremost in the minds of cable companies right now.

Interesting thoughts on the subject, Frank. Although I don't have any URL to point everyone to, I am in close contact with several "prominent" staff engineers with major MSOs who eat and breath this stuff. The scenarios and models are typically not for public consumption. But I can assure you that I have seen many dozens of graphs with multiple curves detailing various assumptions of homes passed, penetration rates, cost of network powering vs. home (battery ) powering, power down the drop vs. siamese twisted pair, on and on.

As an example, one set of curves at Time Warner Cable indicates that local battery power is more economical than network power up to a penetration rate of about 11% for telephony. After that, network powering wins, and increases its advantage as penetration increases.
