Hi Mark,

Good points, but maybe I caused a little confusion.

The size of the embedded market was for devices and associated bits and pieces. HP and Sun do have embedded Java Virtual Machines, Honeywell does not to the best of my knowledge.

The way to think of a JVM is as a necessary component. HP has developed its own because they did not want to be beholden to Sun. However if there was a better one (faster/cheaper/smaller/whatever) they would happily choose it. HP has never had a 'not invented here' problem, at least not in the controls and measurement devices group.

Sun is an interesting case and I confess I cannot decide whether they are a competitor or a collaborator. Because of their decentralization they could easily be both. They have already bought 2 companies with JVMs. One seems to have disappeared without trace.

I believe this is a huge market, with many different players, and no one dominant force (unlike computers). Customers are used to working with smaller companies and having a choice. To a company that has a competitive product this is a good thing.
