Well, to me the good bits about Jesus' (whoever he was) message involve compassion for the poor and love and acceptance of the outcast and downtrodden. These are really leftist radical, socialist messages in their implications, however, and I suspect not too many people are really listening or trying to live their lives the way Jesus did.

X,

It is too bad people can't just take it for a really good story- and try to use the good bits as an example of the best ways to lead one's life

This popped into my head, from W.H. Auden:

Thou shalt not be on friendly terms
with guys in advertising firms
Nor speak with such
As read the bible for its prose
Nor, above all, make love to those
Who wash too much

The worst part about the damned book is that in any normal terms, it isn't even a good story. Seriously one-dimensional characters and an utterly discontinuous plot, among other things I don't care for.

I much prefer Bob Marley. Some excellent guidance there as well, and the beat is infinitely superior.

Emancipate yourself from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds

Even Terrence can agree with that. As true as anything in the bible, no?
