Bennett Calls Clinton a 'Demagogue'

CNS
22 January, 1999 Bruce Sullivan

Former Secretary of Education and the author of "The Death of Outrage," Bill Bennett, had one topic for his speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference near Washington, D.C. yesterday President Bill Clinton and he was outraged.

Quoting from Shakespeare, the erudite Bennett said that Clinton has poisoned the moral atmosphere of the nation. "Fair is foul and foul is fair, through the fog and filthy air," he recited from the play Macbeth, whose theme is the corrupting nature of power.

Bennett said that he blames Clinton for the cynicism in politics today, and called him a "demagogue" who wants to bypass the Senate by appealing to the emotions of the people. Clinton has "trashed the American people," said Bennett.

But the former educator, whose brother Bob is a member of President Clinton's legal team, said the American people have also been victimized by being told for the past 30 years by "television gurus" that it is "wrong to be judgmental," which is the main theme of his book.

"It has taken part of your soul from you," he told the crowd at CPAC. "Even if you have done yourself, what Clinton has done, it does not excuse you from judging him."

Bennett praised fellow Republicans former Tennessee governor Lamar Alexander, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, and family advocate Gary Bauer for their reproval of Clinton, while standing firm on their beliefs.
