I'll admit that I still don't understand the full story behind the embedded ID on the CPU and how that will help security.

But you do have to admit that consumers did ask for this feature indirectly, in that they want their Internet accesses to be more secure. Consumers are still afraid that transactions over the Internet are insecure, even though these same consumers fork over their credit cards at gas stations without a second thought. Intel is trying to address this concern.
