MM = Market maker. A market maker is a brokerage house which chooses stocks in which to 'make the market'. All trades for a given stock are placed via the MM's for that stock. They jockey for position on both the bid and ask price, and not one of them has a conscience. short = selling a stock which you don't own by 'borrowing' the shares, in the hopes of buying it back at a lower price. When an investor buys a stock in the hopes of selling at a higher price, this is called going long. Shorting is what you do when you think a stock is going down in price. Shorting is not for the feint of heart, since there's always more room for a stock to go up than for it to go down. But most importantly, you need to maintain a 'margin' or a certain level of cash in your account to cover the borrowed shares. shorting OTCBB stocks in the US is illegal for the normal investor, but it is apparently legal in some other countries, especially Canada.
