This research is certain to cause a stir. The religionists will be agin it ostensibly because it is immoral, but the real reason will be because success will pop their biggest bubble, that only god can create life.

It would probably be prudent to do this research in space for safety reasons, but remember that the DNA of organisms is being constantly randomly modified by cosmic rays, ionizing radiation, viruses, and chemicals, among other things. That is what drives evolution. Any modification done in the lab was probably already done by nature, with most outcomes not being succesful.

If an identical copy of DNA is synthesized in the lab it will function exactly the same as the original and thus be no more dangerous. Because we cannot be sure though, it would be prudent to quarantine the results in space.
