I gotta believe that the request for additional shares is nothing more than a routine matter that means nothing.
They are running out of enough authorized shares for employee benefit programs, minor acquisitions and the like (you never want to run all the way out). If you are going to authorize additional shares, you don't do it for one or two million. Having the shares authorized in no way means that they have a plan for what to do with them; it just means their legal department is taking care of routing corporate matters.

It's interesting that Compaq's Armada series continues to use the Virge/MX AGP chip. It appears that now even mainstream/lower-end models (1750 series) with the new Pentium II processors released by Intel, are using the chip (Compaq says "4MB SGRAM AGP"). Clearly has S3 been fighting to maintain a foothold in the portable market.

There are some indications that portable systems may in the future use graphics that is integrated with core logic, instead of graphics chips with embedded memory, which could be one reason why S3 cancelled their efforts in the embedded memory area. If you think about it, there seems to be very little point using embedded memory vs. graphics integrated core logic, since core logic integration addresses the same power saving and physical footprint issues, perhaps even in a better way. Trident/VIA and SiS are two companies that have announced products in this area.
