Ericsson GSM mobile a 'first'
The Dominion

CELLPHONE maker [ Ericsson ] has launched
a new GSM digital phone with on-board
infra-red port and PC Card modem.

The SH888 is touted as Ericsson's "most technically advanced" mobile
phone, and is claimed to be the first with built-in modem and infra-red port.

These features give a totally wireless connection between the phone and a
notebook PC or palmtop, for remote network access and faxing while on
the road.

Traditional phones use a PC Card modem, connected between the
computer and phone.

Any computer using the IrDA infra red protocol will communicate with the
SH888. These include most notebook PCs, plus Windows CE, Psion and
Palm III palmtop computers.

The SH888 weighs 195g with an "ultra slim" battery. A larger battery offers
400 minutes of talk time or 120 hour standby.

It is Ericsson's first dual band phone, allowing use with high frequency
GSM1800 networks. Standard functions include SMS messaging, data
capability, call transfer and conference calling.

It is available from Vodafone dealers throughout New Zealand.
