Dennis:

I possess a degree in "low-tech" civil engineering. Everything I've learned 'bout high tech I've learned online on boards such as these & reading the articles published in various technical magazines. I combine by newly acquired knowledge with some basic common sense & intuitive feelings for strategies & competitive markets.

Believe me I've made some mistakes. Fortunately ORCL is not one of them. I do remain a long term investor in ORCL, but to avoid the paper loss I suffered last year I now keep a stop loss in place.

As far as your investment strategy I do support the Peter Lynch principle that you should understand what you're investing in -- at least to some degree. Just because you're not in the industry does not necessarily mean you don't possess the faculties to understand your investment. In some respects being an "outsider" is an asset because your approach is less myopic, & more objective & strategic.

All the information that is available to the marketplace is available on the Web. The more difficult part is to sift thru the BS, weigh the arguments, & come to some conclusion on where you think things are headed. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There are plenty of resources around.
