A surprise was Amdahl. Surprised they are still in business and surprised they gained market share.

Amdahl was sold to a Japanese company last year (can't remember the name).

MB, I think you're misreading the information in the article ...

<<YZ, this one was just chock full of information. Down 8.3% on high end
servers in 1998 means my estimate of flat on server revenues for 1998 is
right on the nostrils, as low end servers came in up 8%. However, it is
also important to note that this -8.3% and the +8% include a ton of
channel stuffing, so sell through sucks big time.>>

IDC appears to use the term server to cover a wide range of boxes. The "high end servers", I believe, are big iron ... IBM mainframes and compatibles, and big data center Unix boxes. So, the -8.3% on high end servers may not tell us anything about the overall computer market (it may ... I'm just not close enough to the market and the numbers to know ... mainframes have been shrinking for several years), and definitely this set of datapoints doesn't shed any light on the PC server market for 1998.
