Bubble, Schmubble: No Panic on the Net

So much for the panic. Internet stocks were mostly firmer Friday morning and hadn't seen the panic selling that characterized Tuesday's trading. The recovery comes despite weakness in the broader market
as losses in IBM (IBM:NYSE) have weakened the Dow.

"Some people have characterized this as a collapse of the [Internet] bubble. But that is overly dramatic because if a bubble bursts it bursts to nothing," said Phil Leigh, vice president of investment research with Raymond James. "Investors have to keep in mind the underlying tide continues to rise. We're still in the first inning with the Internet."

James recommends "selectively initiating positions" in the industry leaders. Some stocks he recommends include broadcast.com (BCST:Nasdaq), CMG Information (CMGI:Nasdaq) and America Online (AOL:NYSE).

The Internet stocks that have suffered the most recently, Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq) and Amazon.com (AMZN:Nasdaq), have overcome early weakness to trade firmer. Yahoo held above support at 250 early today and was up 3 13/16 at 268 1/4. Amazon.com slipped briefly below 100, but recently was up 5 9/16 at 111 1/2.
