You are addressing the importance of taking a theoretical model and applying where it can be adapted and evolved into a new paradigm. The only reason that happens is the theoretical model has an intuitive appeal that implies substantial economies of scale or economies of immediate cost reduction while addressing the inescapable need for orders of magnitude increase in capacity. It may be pr, but both DD and SR are trying to evolve with rather than revolt against large existing infrastructure in WDM. DD wants to put more on each fiber under a management scheme while SR wants to put more on each fiber by brute force. The existing system constraints only constrain the efficiency by which new capital is applied to the inexorable increase in demand. Where possible for reasons of enterprise acceptance the old constraints will squander capital, but Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was it built only by Romans over time. It may be that the Roman road was as important to Rome as Rome was to itself.

I don't know these technologies. The companies won't reveal the details. Reasoning about them may be useless without further basic facts defining just what they are. It is the nature of this thread to show ignorance so that by correction through the known, we might discover the unrevealed. I don't have specific knowledge of real world advanced networking constraints, so I'm not functionally fixated by what presumably can't be done. It is in what can't be done that new solutions arise.
