Although I don't want to rehash Iran- contra, since very little can be proven, but much can be speculated, I do want to point out that raisons d'etat, especially in matters of national security, are traditionally considered to justify lying. Perjuring oneself in a lawsuit is quite different. Also, a love affair is one thing, getting serviced by a subordinate in the Oval Office is another.
