I also like to check earlier than that for gap ups. And I'd prefer to go until 10:30, after that I can wait until lunchtime. In the afternoons I prefer 3:00 - 4:00. If something good is falling right at the close as profit takers bail, that's often a good time to buy for a morning gap up. I think that best suited for our sorts of circumstances are ones in an uptrend that you don't have to watch all the time. Some I like because they released great earnings last week and have good looking futures ahead, and so no earnings warnings are likely are: PLCM, ERTS, and ATML. If any of these gap down in the morning because of weak general market conditions, I might buy on the weakness for a hold. I'm already in PLCM. But even with these sorts it's necessary to keep an eye on the general market. I often just listen to the CBS hourly news on the radio to just keep track of the general market.
