Calvin: thanks for the post by Javaaah. Where is the Yahoo discussion taking place (URL please). Good information. Dynamic compilers are important to Java's success, as is low memory footprint. Both count in an embedded system. HP's Chai may be jaded (If I recall correctly they are still doing 1.0 AWT JDK stuff) but they are really stuffing it into instruments, and that counts. They are also really committed to 'Pure Java' so don't discount them. Also agreed that Sun hasn't delivered some of its Java performance technology (Hotspot is still nowhere to be seen) and Java 2 (jdk 1.2) is even bigger and slower than previous Java's, so pushing the need for performance enhancers harder. Sun, however, stands to gain a lot from Jini and Java, and if Insignia indeed produces a solution to the real problems on the target, then they will have a hot technology on their hands. However, how are they planning to extract money from that technology. It's great that they may be on the verge of closing some big deals, but these are worthless in the long run unless they get a healthy royalty proportional to volume shipped in the embedded units. Anyone have any information on whether the'yre negotiating this kind of deal? Finally, Sun is also building an embedded systems group, hiring like crazy, and acquiring small startups along the way. They may yet prove to be the 800 lb gorilla in that market. P.
