To the Lucent thread,
Being a stk holder in many high tech stks like Lucent,MSFT,SEBL and CSCO I have been doing exhaustive research looking for excellent smaller cap stks to take some of the octane out of my portfolio.
Recently I have come across two fine co,s that are 30% growers that are undervalued and undercovered by Wall St.
The first one is Rock of Ages Corp,[ROAC] selling at $13.50.Founded in 1885 Roac is the only fully intergrated quarrier, manufacturer ans retailer of granite and granite products in North America.Insiders controll most of the stk and Goldman Sachs,Fidelity Mgt and Wellington Mgt controll 21%.Book value is $11.10 and 1998 earnings will be $.90cents and 1999 are projected to be $1.15.
The other stk is American Business Financial Services [ABFI]they are a leading subprime lender who has been doing all the right things. They earner $3.13 in 1998 and are projected to earn $3.75 in 1999.Stk sells for a 4 pe.
Do your own research like I have been for 31 years and reach your own conclusiond. To me here are two fast growing very low risk co's stks that add some balance to my heavily weighted high tech portfolio.
Regards lef

James ---Find it unusual that LU is the only American company bidding for the new telephone network :
Some thoughts
1) LU evidently built it since they were part of ATT at the time ---they should know it well --I wonder if they have been maintaining it for the past five years ?
2) Wonder if they are just doubling the system or modernizing the existing system also . Both ways LU has an advantage ---compatibility with existing equipment and the latest total package for expandibility beyond voice with data and video . I do not believed the competitors have what LU has ---surprise not to see CSCO not a partner with one of the other vendors
3)With the US involvement in protecting SAUDI ARABIA this can be an advantage or disadvantage depending upon your view
4) This definitely one case where I would think LU would finance the hold deal ---swap telephone equipment for barrels of oil

BEST WISHES
