I read the article cited and reproduced by you with great interest. I did so because I have recently had the opportunity to attempt to use some of the voice recognition programs currently being sold. I first used the IBM program known as ViaVoice (tradmarked I'm sure). I had to purchase a new computer as the one I was using was not advanced enough for the program. I was not impressed with the results-- so much so, I sent the program back. It was inconceivable to me that this large successful company would sell this program that worked so poorly and actually place their name on it!! They could not claim that the hardware was the problem as I bought that from them, as well(their latest greatest of course). I also tried the other program , Dragon something or other. Frankly, this program worked much better but still required too much correction. My point is this-- I find it simply amazing that this Portnoy fellow actually was able to accomplish the transcription of 4,5,6 and then 1,4 missing the 9. To be honest with you that is not at all bad when compared with the current state of affairs on a small pc system. I am especially amazed that he accomplished this small feat on what, a 4.77 MHz machine with a 10 meg hard drive!! Were 386s even out then? At any rate, it would appear that Portnoy is parlaying some of that expertise he developed a dozen years ago into a next generation telecom business. I, for one, wish him all the luck in the world-- no that is FNet's territory-- the USA. Thank God we live in the good ole USA where the indiscriminate nay sayers can have their day and the ultimately brave entrepreneur can have his. "Watson, come here; I want you." Did you all know that A. Bell invented the photophone in the 1880s "a device that transmits speech by light rays" I wonder how well that worked?
