is an idea faulty because its advocates are?

The other way around, I'd say. The idea of exclusivity is fundamentally flawed because it assumes that God prefers one religious tradition to all others, which is obviously incompatible with the notion of a just and compassionate God. The response that we cannot impose our notions of justice and compassion on God is absurd; if you believe in God, then it was God who imposed these standards on us, not the other way around.

I do not believe or disbelieve in God; I have not enough evidence or knowledge to declare myself on one side of the other. If I did believe, though, I would have to believe that all religions, major and minor, worship the same God under different names. I admit I'm perverse, but I would rather be damned than accept salvation from a God that condemns people simply because they don't worship the preferred name.
