But a prosperous future for high-tech also will depend on enhancements in raw computing power, said Loest and others. Several contestants thus placed their bets on semiconductor makers. Underpinning these selections as well is the view that chip manufacturers are benefiting from a rebalancing of product supply and demand.

Among contestants' buys, for example, are Analog Devices Inc., LSI Logic Inc., C-Cube Microsystems Inc., Applied Science & Technology Inc. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc., in addition to Intel.

"Semiconductors are strong right now," said Roundhill Securities Senior Vice President Lou Bacher. "They'll continue to be so through the first half of the year."

His top-performing stocks this year are three-month pick PC Quote Inc., six-month pick Adaptec Inc. and one-year buy Metacreations Inc., which have rocketed 50 percent, 38 percent and 40 percent, respectively, since Jan 1. He shorted online auctioneer Ubid Inc., viewing it as wildly overvalued.
