JMAR Unveils New Britelight Commercial Laser At Photonics West Equipment Exhibition, Jan. 26-28

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 1999--

Product to Be Sold and Marketed Under Agreement

With Leading Laser Distributor, Polytec PI

JMAR Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq/NM:JMAR), a growing provider of precision micro-technology systems and products, will publicly introduce the BL-1001 laser at the Photonics West exhibition, Jan. 26-28, at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif.

The BL-1001 is the first of JMAR's emerging family of Britelight(TM) high performance, diode-pumped solid state lasers to enter the commercial marketplace.

The BL-1001 is a picosecond-pulsed, low-maintenance, long-life, all solid state laser designed for high-precision manufacturing and scientific applications. It will be marketed and sold by Polytec PI, a world-leading distributor of specialty lasers.

Under an agreement signed last year, Polytec PI will sell the BL-1001 exclusively for the scientific market in the United States and Canada and non-exclusively for other applications. Demonstrations of the new Britelight(TM) technology will be held at Polytec's Booth (No. 1408) at the show.

John S. Martinez, Ph.D., JMAR's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "Our family of patented Britelight(TM) lasers is the successful by-product of many years of ground-breaking research and development into the use of unique laser-produced plasmas to generate X-rays for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. As we have progressed toward that goal we discovered new, commercially viable ways to use derivatives of that technology -- in the form of lasers of varying performance characteristics that we expect will be extremely effective in microelectronics and other industrial applications."

"We look for our new relationship with Polytec PI to help maximize Britelight's(TM) excellent commercial potential," Dr. Martinez continued.

"In addition to being perfectly suited for a variety of manufacturing uses, the BL-1001's precision makes it ideal for research and development applications. For more than 25 years, Polytec has worked with research and development experts on a worldwide basis to match the right laser systems to the proper projects."

The BL-1001 is ideally suited for a wide range of precision scientific and material processing uses. Britelight's(TM) short pulses minimize undesirable heating effects in most materials, resulting in extremely clean material removal, a requisite for high precision cutting, ablation, drilling, marking and micromachining applications in the microelectronics industry.

It is capable of generating up to 1,000 high-energy ultra-short pulses per second of either infrared (1.06 micron) or green (0.532 micron) light in tightly focused near diffraction-limited beams.

The BL-1001 was originally developed as the "seed" laser to trigger JMAR's laser plasma PXS X-ray lithography source. When coupled with high performance Britelight(TM) laser amplifiers, also developed under the PXS program, the nominal 1-watt average power output of the BL-1001 is expandable up to 100 watts with very short-pulse, tightly focused laser beams ideally suited for a range of high throughput material processing applications.

JMAR Technologies, Inc. develops, manufactures and markets precision measurement, process control and laser manufacturing systems, provides custom semiconductor products for the microelectronics industry and is a leading developer of advanced lithography sources for production of future higher performance semiconductors.
