That's the announcement coming down from Fore Systems Inc. Its Firewall Switching Agent (FSA) embeds instructions from Check Point's market-leading Firewall-1 in custom chips inside Fore gigabit Ethernet switches, delivering aggregate rates of up to 20 Gbit/s, according to the vendor-much faster than the 50- to 100-Mbit/s top speeds of most standalone firewalls. And because the chip is inside the switch, net managers won't need to shell out for standalone firewalls for every link. Those savings could be used for FSAs not only on the perimeter of a network but also to protect internal links-where most security breaches occur, according to some studies.
