Re: Let me be more clear about the copy protection thing

Granted you have the right idea, but the mechanism is unlikely. To customize the binary at download is too cumbersome, hence the popup dialog during install/configuration that asks for the key. This install process embeds the unique identifier or key we are both speaking about. The downloaded binary is useless without the key, and the key is useless without the correct box.

Think about going to the store and buying a new shrink wrapped CD based game. Then going to the vendors web site, entering your information, receiving a key and installing via the vendors setup program. This is the current method used today on most programs that have high levels of security, today however they are based on your ethernet MAC address.

We are both saying the same thing in the end, I just wanted to clarify the part about when the key is embeded into the application.

This raises the more interesting question which is "re-hosting" i.e. you upgrade/swap to a new computer. How do you tell the vendor you have done such and should be given a new key for the new box? How often will the vendor allow this, once or twice a year? What if I have more than one computer, a desktop and a laptop? Thinking about these issues makes one think the use of any type of key will be limited to the higher end applications (read expensive) with lower volumes, not things like quake or doom.
