Chicago Pizza & Brewery Opens BJ's Pizza & Grill in Arcadia Business Wire - January 26, 1999 09:45 MISSION VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 26, 1999-- Strengthening its existing position in Los Angeles County, Chicago Pizza & Brewery Inc. (Nasdaq: CHGO) has opened a new BJ's Pizza & Grill restaurant in Arcadia. The Arcadia opening will be followed in March with an additional Los Angeles County site in Woodland Hills -- the largest restaurant in the 29-store restaurant chain. The Woodland Hills store will be more than 12,000 square feet, with 560 seats and a microbrewery on site. The company also will open a third L.A. County site later this year in Valencia. "We are constantly looking for prime new locations," said Paul Motenko, chief executive officer of Chicago Pizza & Brewery Inc., with headquarters in Mission Viejo. "Our objective is to grow at a steady but prudent pace. "Discovering the Arcadia site was a highlight for our development plans," Motenko continued. "We tend to integrate well with spirited communities -- those communities that balance education, culture, and commerce. Family-driven Arcadia is a natural for the BJ's concept. He anticipates healthy sales at the Arcadia store, which had a successful public opening Jan. 21. "We had a great turnout during our opening weekend, and the restaurant and bar were jam-packed until very late each night," he said. "Our guests seemed to particularly enjoy our handcrafted microbrews." BJ's began 20 years ago as a traditional pizzeria serving deep-dish, Chicago-style pizza. Today, along with its award-winning pizza, BJ's presents a full menu, features inviting interior design, and brews its own line of stellar lagers and ales. Like BJ's pizza, the beers have won numerous awards, including prestigious medals from the 1996 and 1998 Great American Beer Festival, the 1998 California and Colorado state fairs, and the 1998 World Beer Championships. Some restaurants are breweries. All others -- brewhouses -- serve the specialty brews. With the opening of the Arcadia restaurant, Chicago Pizza & Brewery Inc. now owns and operates five restaurants in Orange County; three in Los Angeles County, including Westwood and Belmont Shore locations; single restaurants in San Diego County; Boulder, Colo.; and Lahaina, Hawaii; and 17 BJ's and Pietro's restaurants in Oregon and Washington.
