Here is an example of why consolidation in the offshore drilling business is tough.

From the press conference last week with Bob Rose of GLM:

"It's a fragmented market because of egos," says Rose. "It's time to put aside egos and try to bring about consolidation."

Then Mr. Rose says:

But Rose said he didn't like the idea of Global Marine being absorbed by another company.

Global Marine, Rose said, would not favor being acquired by a major or large service company, in effect becoming one of many divisions of a giant company. "That wouldn't be our first choice," he said.

Sounds like the "not in my backyard" syndrome...
