In the 70s, I noticed that every democrat senator was a millionaire, most having achieved that distinction while in office.

Dole is the most vivid example of this lately. As opposed to the Clintons. I suspect it was just that there is an tendency for politicians to accumulate wealth, sometimes somewhat unethically sometimes not, and at the time the Dems were in power so thats what you saw.
