If one were given a choice of operating systems when one ordered the machine, the price would be greater, due to administrative overhead.

Those silly consumers. Paying extra for soda due to all the choices. Paying more money for fast food at McDonalds due to the presence of Burger King. Unbelievable.

Assume that you're getting Windows for free, and go use something else if you want.

Yeah, that'll work.

That's not a valid assumption. The Win9x is about $90 out of the computer cost. This was the same when computers were 2 and 3 thousand dollars. Today's computers are 699 and up yet MSFT still gets $90 per box.

This doesn't bode well for MSFT's future.

People will figure out this snake-oil-smoke-and-mirrors game and at that point, MSFT will be toast.

Enjoy your "profits" while you can.

FWIW

Never assume anything - you know how the saying goes :) Windows IS NOT FREE or cheap.

Unfortunately you need to investigate things more and look beyond today. There's always some "peak" in every cycle and right now the PC Era is right there...

Take some time to read through this:

Great and insightful with just enough of the truth to really matter.
