FORE Systems Wins Two Data Communications 1999 Hot Products Awards

ForeRunner ASX-4000 Captures Top Prize in Enterprise WAN Equipment Category; Firewall Switching Agent Wins in Security Category

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- FORE Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE - news), a leading global supplier of advanced networking solutions, today announced that its ForeRunner® ASX(TM)-4000 ATM switch and Firewall Switching Agent (FSA) each were recognized by Data Communications' editors as winners in the Seventh Annual HOT PRODUCTS competition featured in the January 7, 1999, issue. The ASX-4000 won the Enterprise WAN Equipment -- ATM Switch category, and the FSA won in the Security -- Silicon Firewall category. The wins make FORE Systems one of only two companies to win multiple awards in this year's HOT PRODUCTS competition.

''These prestigious awards recognize FORE's commitment to leading the industry in providing innovative networking solutions with the features today's customers want,'' said Donal Byrne, senior vice president corporate marketing at FORE Systems. ''They also further confirm that FORE Systems is a premier provider of scalable, secure and reliable solutions for service provider and enterprise customers alike.''

The ASX-4000: ''Bigger and Faster than the Competition''

In awarding the ASX-4000 the HOT PRODUCT Award in the Enterprise WAN Equipment -- ATM Switch category, Data Communications' Andrew Cray and Stephen Saunders wrote, ''With its ASX-4000 ATM switch, Fore Systems Inc. is thinking big -- and bringing big benefits to corporate networkers.''

The ASX-4000 is a groundbreaking switch from FORE Systems that utilizes the same proven ForeThought® software as the company's other award-winning ATM switches. The ASX-4000 offers 10, 20, 30 or 40 Gbps of non-blocking, full-duplex switching capacity, and it delivers the first OC-48c (2.5 Gbps) ATM ports in the industry. Providing a scalable, reliable, high-speed foundation for building networking solutions that last, the ASX-4000 is specifically designed for the core of the Internet and the backbone of large enterprises.

''FORE's FSA Boosts Throughput to MultiGigabit Rates''

In recognizing the FSA, Data Communications' David Newman wrote, ''(FORE's) Firewall Switching Agent (FSA) embeds instructions from Check Point's market- leading FireWall-1 in custom chips inside FORE gigabit Ethernet switches, delivering aggregate rates of up to 20 Gbit/s, according to the vendor -- much faster than the 50- to 100-Mbit/s top speeds of most standalone firewalls.''

Working with FORE's ESX(TM)-2400 and ESX-4800 Application Aware(TM) multi- Gigabit switches, the FSA provides simultaneous Gigabit line-rate TCP/IP firewalling, line-rate switching/routing and strong quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. It performs much of the inspection and all of the forwarding in switch hardware, which is made possible by microcode that runs on custom- built, programmable ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits). Policy management and control takes place through a series of network and application agent plug-ins for the ESX switches.
