i GUARANTEE you that more people have lost money listening to some crackpot on SI than listening to the "professional" pump'n'dump crowd

I think we're often dealing with a combination of the two. Take, for example, the so-called "Rocketeer" stocks: DGIV, MTEI, INFE. Last spring and early summer they were wildly hyped, ostensibly by a handful of thread gurus (the "Rocketeer Leaders") and their devoted followers. Overnight fortunes were made, and for the most part lost. As far as I know, none of the online hypesters made out very well; a few have in fact gone bankrupt. What about the people behind them, though? The pros? As it turns out, the thread contributors had for the most part been quite deliberately manipulated by "insider" types who called frequently, flattered them outrageously, assured them that they were "in the know".

Which, in fact, they were. They just weren't telling ALL they knew. And so the online gurus continued to hype themselves silly while their masters sold into rallies. Once they'd made their exit and the volume died out, price began to drop. Slowly at first and then precipitiously. At first the Nasty Bashers were blamed, but eventually most "investors" realized they'd been had.

In the case of MTEI, which is the one I know best, by a combination of dishonest management, professional promoters, and online gurus being used by the first two. I don't think any of 'em was actually paid for his efforts: phone calls and stroking were apparently quite enough.
