a peculiar coup d'etat
I think the Radicals hunger for a signifigant victory. Any victory. Their gloom & doom predictions for the current state of government have not come to pass. Any ideas they had which were reasonable were coopted by the President. It appears that if republicans were to win, it would be the moderates, so the Radicals don't have much to lose. They are willing to burn down the house to get a clean start.
