Who's playing fast and loose with facts? you said
<This one is called wideband
CDMA. Does this mean good news for
Qualcomm? Nope. Qualcomm owns the
patents on narrowband CDMA. Qualcomm
is not nearly as major a player in the
wideband arena. Wideband versus
narrowband comes down to an issue of
increased capacity and a different
emphasis on what is transmitted. Wideband
is focused on providing data and
messaging services like two-way paging,
where narrowband is based on providing
voice services.*>
Now I wont be as arrogent and presuptious as you by saying WCDMA is just a pirated version of CDMA and CDMA2000. However the ownership of this technology is definetly being disputed. It's come down to a he said she said debate. The only objective source domoco(japenese telco)has stated they believe that over 1500 worldwide patents of Qcom do apply. That of course does not make it legal, but it does imply that the debate is far from over. I would also add that Erickson has done nothing to diferentiate CDMA2000(Qcom's wideband CDMA which you forgot to mention)from WCDMA. I could be wrong and you could be right but your implications are mis-leading and incorect.

Since you are an obvious Ericy proponent please explain to me how Ericy's WCDMA is diferent from CDMA2000(which will be available next year). They have lowered the chip rate so dont give that line of BS. I am a shareholder of almost all these companies(NOK.a,Ericy,LU,MoT etc) and believe that Ericy is full of S--t. I own the stock because I think they are about to make a deal with QCOM. This will prove the lack of credibility in their WCDMA arguments. They have no other choice.

ElMatador - That Forbes article is just plain bad. I recommend you go back to where it was discussed on the Qualcomm thread when it originally came out. There are several misleading and factual errors in it. Just FYI.

Clark

PS That footnote at the bottom is probably the result of yours truly, but the original wording is just an indication of how little the author understands what is going on.

ElMatador, you maintain you have a sense of humour. I suppose that is why you published that funny article. Clark has corrected one little point. There are many more. But we know you aren't interested getting things right, so I'll leave you to it. GSM radio emissions increase soil strength in Asia - that's why GSM towers don't fall over.

GSM is LOVED so much by Asians that they are thinking of marrying it.

Qualcomm completely fooled all the operators who were silly enough to pay twice the price for cdmaOne instead of GSM per channel. But it was a good confidence trick because none of them are claiming damages due to fraud, misrepresentation and unfit for purpose networks.

Anyway, GSM won't be replaced! GSM will form the basis for VW40. Only the radio element will need to be replaced and this doesn't mean that GSM isn't as good as cdmaOne or cdma2000. That GSM sure is just amazing.

The GSM operators are upset at the way Qualcomm is portraying its cause. Rightly so too! Fancy Qualcomm claiming patents over their technology just because the patent offices issued patents. Apparently they are even wanting payment for goodness sake! What a crazy crowd those San Diegans are. They are portraying Europeans as wanting to exclude Qualcomm. What a falsehood. Qualcomm is welcome to provide their technology on a free and uniformly accessible basis in exchange for an Ericy patent on how to handover a TDMA handset from one base station to another in special circumstances [if the same frequency is available on both basestations] . Ericy is perhaps being overly generous, but I suppose in the interests of the greater good of humanity they are happy to offer than wondrous technology to the world.

GSM rules the world! Hail to the Chief. Long live King Ericy. What a beautiful cloak the King is wearing. How clever the management is to fire 10,000 employees when Nokia, Qualcomm and others are stupid enough to have increased their employee numbers over the past 4 years.

The coup de grace for Qualcomm:
"What Qualcomm is trying
to tell everyone is that the world would be
better off if we agreed on the same air
interface--and by the way you have to have
Qualcomm's [system] in the middle of it so
they can have an ongoing royalty stream.
What the GSM community is saying is 'we
don't need you, because to conform with
what you want would degrade what we have
invented."

Qualcomm is irrelevant! Go Ericy! It is incredible that Q! can think they'll get money for something they didn't invent.

Maurice

PS: I wonder if any Ericy reps have called on their Vodafone-Airtouch customers yet to get an order for some more GSM equipment. Vodafone said they were going to use clout to get their way on 3G. I suppose when the rep calls in, the Vodafone Network Manager will tell him "Man, GSM rules! Get your order book out because I want to give you a big fat order for expansion of our GSM networks even though we have no idea what the 3G standard will do and what our cdmaOne upgrade route will be. It's so fun giving you an order for $1bn when we don't know what the equipment will be worth in a year from now. What the hell...life's a giggle and the shareholders won't be worried.
One of my silly bosses said that we should look at having our cdmaOne equipment able to be upgraded at low cost - I told him, "GSM rules" and that was good enough for him. So, how soon can you supply $1bn worth of GSM upgrades and what do you think we should do with all this junky cdmaOne stuff we bought with AirTouch? Do you think the subscribers will care that they won't be able to use their handsets on the new systems based on your amazing VW40 creation? No? Okay, well, how about we pay you in advance for this order - here, I can't wait, lemmee write out a check right now!"

I bet the Ericy reps are just thrilled with the purchasing clout they will be getting about now from Vodafone! With fewer employees in Ericy producing the same technology, they are probably all getting huge pay increases too. Life must be fun as an Ericy rep right now.
