>> Here is my latest question, maybe you can help Rick:
I understand that Gene Logic, and a handful of other
genomic/bioinformatic companies, are looking for compounds
that have an effect on expression of relevant genes--what
are the advantages of looking at the genetic level, rather
than searching somewhere further down the line of cellular
events? <<

Companies like MLNM and CRGN are attempting to do both. Well, MLNM *is* doing both, and several other companies are trying to do both.

One wants to look at the genetic level for several reasons.... among others, to detect potential therapeutics ala HGSI and MLNM Biologics, and to map genes (polymorphisms) that determine "fit" with a given therapy among humans.

You're correct..... while companies muck around in the third-tier with good molecules but limited resources, we run the risk that other attractive molecules will be discovered and that they'll have more bucks and hype behind them. However, a really good molecule will always find a route to extensive testing. Don't know anything about the CNSI effort other than it looked like a company-saving deal, sorry.

Now.... looking "further down the line of cellular events?"..... this can have two meanings...... you could mean stuff that regulates the expression of a given gene (ARIA- and SUGN-like efforts), or you could mean a target "downstream" in the same metabolic pathway ("path calling", if you like..... MLNM- and CRGN-like efforts).

I've put these companies into envelopes and labeled them. That's probably fair with SUGN, but it's certainly not possible for MLNM.
