Richie, from the looks of the food chain (INTC, AMD, and MSFT), it looks like there will be a nice surprise on the 27th BTB. I am trying to get some options as a short term play.

:O)

I have absolutely no idea what earnings are going to look like. I'm scared. This sucks.

****Compaq Spinning Off All Or Part Of AltaVista Unit - Report
Newsbytes - January 25, 1999 23:54
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, U.S.A., 1999 JAN 25 (NB) -- By Bob Woods, Newsbytes. Less than a year after acquiring Digital Equipment Corp., Compaq Computer Corp. [NYSE:CPQ] is reportedly planning to spin off all or part of one of DEC's subsidiaries, AltaVista.

Dow Jones quotes people close to the company as saying Compaq also plans to install a new management team at Palo Alto, Calif.-based AltaVista, including current Compaq Consumer Products Group Senior Vice President Rod Schrock.

Compaq "insiders" quoted by Dow Jones said while company execs have looked at a spin off with an aversion, they eventually decided AltaVista needs to be separate to compete with the consolidations currently taking place in the Internet sector. The extremely high valuations seen by many Internet companies also helped sway Compaq's thinking, Dow Jones said.

Officially, the company has only said it plans a New York City news conference at 10:00 AM EST Tuesday morning, to "announce the company's Internet strategy for AltaVista." Expected at the news conference are Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq president and chief executive officer, and Schrock.

Newsbytes plans complete coverage of the news conference.
