Intel has done the smart thing IMHO.

Making it optional is clearly the way to handle this.

By the way, I have seen some S/W folks use the unique ID on you disk drive as a way of keying the software to a specific machine, so the technology to lock the software has already existed.

Also, the BIOS can also be keyed as well with a HOSTID etc.

So, in summary this now a non-issue any more unless one simply wants to keep harping on it.
