I have heard nothing, zero, zilch regarding improved cap ex in Japan. Analysts (all of them Westerners, for whatever that's worth) are using phrases like "dismantling their high-tech industry" to describe the Japanese chip business. The thinking seems to be that Japan is culturally more able to withstand a deep depression than to implement the various recommended reforms.

Equipment sales by Japanese suppliers are another question. These companies should rise with the rest of the equipment industry, since they've got reasonably good competitive positions outside Japan.
