Fiber is not in conflict with cable. Cable is used to hook up the last mile from the switch station to people's home. That's all what cable is useful. It's not economical to wire up everybody's home with expensive fiber. However, in the future, the complete backbone network that cable replies on will be built by fiber OC-45 and up.
Go read the PR that AT&T will build @Home's backbone network. You will read OC-45 in there. So, fiber works with cable side by side.
