I vote this comment to be THE understatement of the day. <vbg> Let it be Mark! IBM is rumored to announce a split tomorrow! The climate is right, LET IT BE!!! Thanks for the info. GO LU!!!!!!!!!

I seem to recall someone in here posting that LU had enough shares already available for a 2-for-1 split before they sent out their proxy with the additional share vote on it. If this is the case, then I guess that would support the rumor of a 3-for-1 split.

From the Proxy Statement:

As of October 1, 1998, approximately 1.3 billion of the Company's 3 billion currently authorized Shares were issued and outstanding. Of the remaining authorized Shares, approximately 400 million were reserved for issuance in connection with the Company's stock-based compensation plans...The current number of authorized Common Shares that are not outstanding or reserved is not sufficient to enable the Company to complete another 2-fo-1 stock split.

Definitely looks like they're preparing for a split, but no indication to me of a 3:1. My guess is that this positions them well for a forthcoming 2:1 split, followed by another 2:1 split sometime after that, without having to get approval again for more shares.
