Dow Jones Newswires

Checkfree Up 22% On Rumors Of Imminent
Deal With Portal Co.

Dow Jones Newswires

NEW YORK -- Shares of Checkfree Holdings Corp. (CKFR) gained 22%
Monday on speculation that the company will announce a pact with an
Internet portal company when it reports its earnings Tuesday.

Checkfree, which provides electronic-commerce services, has said in the past
that it was exploring relationships with portal companies. Now, company
watchers are expecting that Checkfree will announce the fruit of those talks is
a deal with either Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO) or America Online Inc. (AOL), said
Pacific Growth Equities analyst Steve Olson.

While Olson "wouldn't rule out" a deal being announced in the next several
days, he said an agreement could take longer to produce.

Other company watchers similarly suggested that a portal deal could be
further off. A deal is more likely to be reached toward the middle of the year,
said Legg Mason Wood Walker analyst Pawan Malhotra.

If an agreement is reached with a portal company, Checkfree would likely
provide services so that customers could receive and pay their bills online,
Olson said, noting that this would represent a new distribution channel for the
company.

Separately, Malhotra also suggested that the stock could be getting a boost
from the expectation that the company's subscriber growth was above the 5%
target in the latest quarter.

Spokespeople from Checkfree and America Online were not immediately
available for comment. A Yahoo! spokeswoman declined to comment.

Checkfree shares were recently up 5 1/8, or 17.9%, at 33 3/4, on volume of
2.1 million shares. Average daily volume is 711,740.

I would certainly prefer eating lobster on a camel than the reverse.
