These were the simple kinds of background checks not performed by a sloppy administration. They brought in outsiders to straighten up the place. The Democrats were much worse on the confirmation hearings for Tower and Thomas. The Democrats and the Republicans have been doing this for many decades. It's when Clinton suspended security checks, these kinds of obvious background problems became almost routine.
