Gerald, Re: "And if someone else logs onto my work machine while I'm not there, say because I logged off or they reboot the machine, then they have my recognized trusted agent for access to that site?

Worse than useless"

No well implemented system would depends on the machine id alone
if security is a concern. It is ADDED security. Seems there is
many misunderstanding here.

Think about it for a moment... you would never allow the system to be perceived as trusted if you did not have control of it at all times. This would included your home system(s) where other family members might use your identity. A simple fix is a password along with the ID... not total protection for the consumer, but much stronger then password alone.

This is more about consumer protection then business snooping. The consumer can choose to protect themselves by requiring the cybermerchants to only do business with their ID'd PC, and you could use that ID's PC in combination with passwords in cases were the machine is not in the total control of the consumer, or for added protection in general. None of this is foolproof, but giving the consumers options for better protection is good.

Gerald, re: your distaste for enhanced security

Fine. Exercise your right as a consumer. Stick with your old machine.
