Lucent Unveils 7.5Km Wireless LAN Kit

DUBLIN, IRELAND (NB) -- By Sylvia
Dennis, Newsbytes. Network carriers
love medium-haul wide area network
(WAN) connections because of the
ongoing revenue. Now Lucent
Technologies [NYSE:LU] has driven a
steamroller through such aspirations with
its new WaveLAN Point-to-Point
wireless LAN kit, simply because the
system offers firms the chance to hook up
their LAN/LAN connections at distances
of up to 7.5 kilometers (4.5 miles) apart.
Such distances have traditionally been
beyond the range of the "no license
required" 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) spread
spectrum technology that has appeared on
the market this past few years. However,
Lucent says that, by refining its
WaveLAN system, it has achieved a 7.5
kilometer line of sight range.
According to company officials, the
WaveLAN/Point-to-Point kit is a
complete all-in-one-box wireless bridge
system and includes a WavePOINT II
point-to-point bridge, WaveLAN/IEEE
radio PCMCIA (Personal Computer
Memory Card International Association)
card, cable assembly, lightning protector,
Yagi antenna, and all required supporting
software.
Lucent says that, at a stroke, its new kit
eliminates the costly aspects of digging
trenches or relying on network carriers
for the provision of leased lines.
The technology used in the new kit is
direct sequence spread spectrum
technology which Lucent says allows
WAN connections of up to two megabits
per second (Mbps), with a setup time
measured in a matter of hours, rather than
days.
According to Harry Stevens, the firm's
WaveLAN business manager, the bundled
WaveMANAGER software makes for
easy software configuration. "Having a
highly reliable system is what customers
are looking for," he explained.
