States Chafe as Web Shoppers Ignore Sales Taxes.

Article in today's Wall Street Journal, page B1.

As Internet share of sales increases, pressure will build on states and other taxing authorities to make up for the lost revenue. Multi-state tax collection by online sellers would be too difficult, so it might have to be a national tax that is then distributed.

Many consumers are ignoring the 'fine print' -- "The purchaser is responsible for remitting any additional taxes to the taxing authority."

Last week, seven groups, including the Council of State Governments and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, sent a letter to President Clinton and members of Congress urging them to redress the panel's imbalance [advisory panel on Internet-tax policy]. The letter asked them to ensure that the committee "does not serve as a mechanism to harm or create a bias against local retailers" or "serve as a tax haven to drain vital resources critical to education, health care and public safety."

Those last three items ...aren't they part of the Clinton mantra, too?
