Once we went to confession and Skip and I went first and my mother said we could go sit in the car after we said our penance while she went in, and when she got back out to the car, I was beating him in the head with a hairbrush and we were both screaming. I must have been 12 or 13. She made me go back in to confession. I still remember the humiliation I felt because of course Father McCarthy knew EXACTLY who I was; I mean he came to dinner at our house every week and drank with my dad.
